Energy and Greenhouse Gases
In this section:
• Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Goals
• Energy Efficiency at the Breweries
• Renewable Energy
Energy conservation has been a strategic focus of the company for many years, especially at the breweries, which represent the largest share of energy use. During the past two years, this energy focus has developed into a comprehensive set of initiatives around conserving energy, using renewable energy resources and minimizing climate change risks.

Key Strategies:
-
Implement our Utilities Process Analysis and Reduction program at all breweries — an approach that uses process control, real-time data and utilities trend analyses to help breweries identify and implement practices to reduce the use of energy and water
- Improve energy efficiencies through investment in capital projects, and the implementation of process changes and improved procedures
- Expand the use of Bio-Energy Recovery Systems (BERS) at our breweries and improve the efficiency of these systems
- Evaluate other options, in addition to BERS, of incorporating renewable energy sources into our portfolio
- Partner with organizations to identify opportunities for energy conservation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Support and promote initiatives that encourage responsible energy management and facilitate voluntary reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
- Participate in emerging regulatory initiatives, such as California's Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006
Our energy management plan has already netted positive results. In 2006, we nearly achieved our 2010 goals of 0.728 thousand gigajoules of electricity use per million dollars adjusted net sales, and 1.798 thousand gigajoules of total fuel use per million dollars adjusted net sales. Going forward, we will strive to keep energy use flat as we continue to grow our operations and revenues.
