A Message from August A. Busch IV
President and Chief Executive Officer
Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc.
To Our Employees, Shareholders, Customers, Business Partners and other Stakeholders,
I’m pleased to present Anheuser-Busch's 2006 Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Report.
Today, every company is "going green." But at Anheuser-Busch, we are proud to say that our tradition of environmental stewardship and workplace safety dates back to our founder, Adolphus Busch. In the 1800's, we began with recycling spent brewers’ grain for cattle feed. Our work with Keep America Beautiful created the “Pitch In” campaign in the 1950s. In 1978, we formed the Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corporation, a company that is now one of the largest recyclers of aluminum beverage containers in the world. Annually, we recycle more than 27 billion cans, more cans than our breweries package.
On the animal education and conservation side, our subsidiaries, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove, are widely recognized as global leaders in wildlife conservation and education. The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, a not-for-profit organization we created in 2003, provides grants to preserve and protect wildlife and their habitats, by focusing support in species research, habitat protection, animal rescue and conservation education. We also partner with leading environmental organizations to preserve wetlands, protect wildlife and their habitats, promote recycling and litter prevention and clean up our nation’s waterways.
When it comes to workplace safety, we are also a leader. We believe that our employees are our greatest asset. For this reason, we engage in numerous workplace programs designed to reduce, and hopefully someday eliminate employee injuries, and health care initiatives focused on preventive care.
By conserving water and energy, eliminating waste and using recycled materials and preventing workplace accidents, Anheuser-Busch will continue its long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and workplace safety. Our programs and actions in these areas benefit our employees, customers, shareholders and the world.
In this dynamic and exciting time in our company’s history and in the beverage industry as a whole, I firmly believe that our dedication to environmental, health and safety excellence, integrated with our business goals, positions our company for continued leadership and future growth. I recognize and applaud the exceptional efforts of our employees for the work they do – on and off the job – to protect the environment and to promote health and safety.
